Surprise! Here we are again. We cruised on Sunday from Tarrytown to Newburgh, NY. We started out in drizzle but as we started north the rains came and the fog settled in. Since we were running the river we decided to move on. The fog and rain continued until we approached West Point the fog lifted just in time to see the big fortress on the mountain.

We stayed at the Front Street Marina in Newburg. It’s right on the river and we got a lot of boat wake. Sleeping was quite a challenge as the boat rocked, rolled and pitched.

Newburgh is a community in the midst of revitalization. The river front has 8 restaurants to choose from and lots of beautiful homes just ready to be re-habbed. There is also a spa and my toes are really happy.

Yesterday, we took a cab to West Point to tour that campus. The fortress we saw from the water is huge. I believe the guide told us it covers 3300 acres. Lots of those acres are on the side of mountain. West Point was a fortress during the Revolutionary War and the British were kept from moving down the Hudson to New York harbor because the American Army could fire their cannons and the British ships couldn’t move their guns high enough to fire back. I promise that’s all the history. It’s almost impossible not to think about history when you’re traveling in this area.

The photos from West Point are from the Chapel and the residence hall looking across the parade field. We didn’t see any cadets. Graduation was over Memorial Day and the new cadets don't arrive until the end of June.

The picture from the war memorial overlooking the Hudson is my favorite photo. It is looking north down the Hudson Valley.

The next 5 pictures are the lighthouses along the Hudson moving north. We left Newburg this morning and cruised to Troy, NY. The day was beautiful, sunny and warm. The river was full of floating debris but we didn’t sustain any damage until we were tied up at the marina. A Grand Banks made a hard landing on our anchor pulpit as they docked.

I’m not sure how far we’ll have cell phone coverage as we move inland. It has been really enjoyable to hear from so many people as we move on our course. Thank you for your emails and good wishes. We’ll keep you posted.
