Don’t let the date on this entry confuse you. I’m trying to
fill in the blanks of our travels. We’ve been out of Verizon
Network more than we’ve been in since we entered Michigan and
I forget where I’ve written about.
We crossed from Ontario to Michigan thru the Mississagi Strait
to Mackinaw City. The day was overcast when we left and moved
onto rain and lightening as we moved closer to the US. We were
right on the line of bad weather. The wind and waves were
surprisingly light considering the clouds conditions. We made
the cross in 5 hours and stayed at the Mackinaw City Municipal
Marina. It is right in town and a stone’s throw from one of
the ferry operations to Mackinac Island.
We decided to stay over and take the ferry to the island on
Tuesday. What a good idea! The day was sunny and warm with a
light breeze. Before we left the boat we met some folks with
Eddy Creek connections. We had a nice visit and got some
Kentucky news.
The trip to Mackinac was fast and the day was gorgeous. We
walked to the Fort and walked the grounds and buildings there.
We saw muskets being fired from the parade ground and a cannon
fired from the fort wall. It was good to walk after being on
the boat so long.
The pictures are of Mackinac, the Fort and the Lighthouse. The
turtle is decorated for the turtle contest. Like cows in
Chicago and pigs in Cincinnati the turtles were decorated for
Mackinac.
We cruised to Petoskey on Wednesday. I was happy to be there
and tied in a slip. The wind started to blow about 2 pm and
kept the flags standing straight out until 10 pm. Petoskey is
a great town for “FuFu” shopping. Lots of cute shops with
nautical items or anything else you might need except
groceries. There are several nice restaurants but no grocery.
Not cooking is not a bad thing.
From there we went to Charlevoix. We stayed at the Irish Boat
Works. The downtown Municipal Marina put me in the mind of
Killarney. I just wanted a slip of my very own and power at
the pedestal. I did get laundry done there with plenty of time
to walk into town and see the sights. Charlevoix is nice but I
liked Petoskey better. We did get to visit with the “Amanda K”
folks. We haven’t seen then since our engine experience
outside of Melborne, FL.
We moved on to Northport the next day. The seas were 3-5 feet
taking them on the starboard side. Not my favorite ride. I was
happy to tie up in the Municipal Marina. It is well protected
and a good town to visit.
The next day was on to Frankfort. Our cruise was very
comfortable. The winds and seas were calm and the ride was
what cruising should be (for me anyway). That was literally
the calm before the storms. |
