We enjoyed having the Phelps here. They arrived a little late
due to storms in Atlanta but they were here for beer time and
a beautiful sunset. We went to Key West on Saturday. The day
started very warm and muggy. About mid morning the breezes
started and cooled things right down. By the time we got to
Key West it was really windy but that was no problem as we
were in lots of stores, galleries and bars.
It was way too windy, cloudy and cool for a good sunset.
Mallory square was pretty deserted so we opted for dinner.
From there we visited the local pubs and ended up at Sloppy
Joe’s for dancing and people watching.
We stayed in Key West Saturday night so there was no midnight
driving up Hwy 1. Sunday was still cool and breezy. Look for
Sandy’s new lighthouse. That was our number one stop before
heading back to the boat.
Monday was beach and reading day. We had some clouds in the
morning so Sandy and I did a little shopping. By the time we
got home the clouds had parted and we were ready with our
books and chairs. The sun was warm and balmy.
The sunset for their last night was spectacular! We had dinner
at a great sandy beach and sunset restaurant next to World
Wide Fishermen. Sandy liked the bar at WWF so we walked over
there and had a quiet drink and watched the water.
They left yesterday about noon but not before I introduced
Sandy to water aerobics. We had a bonus of exercising in a
Florida rain shower. (Well at times it was more of a
downpour.) I think she may have slept on their trip back to
Ft. Lauderdale to catch the plane.
It was quiet here last night. I hope they enjoyed themselves.
We sure enjoyed showing off our little corner of the Keys.

Happy Valentine’s Day (one day removed). The weatherman was
correct and the promised rain arrived. It was a downpour for
awhile. The sewer system is still under construction and the
rain water stands in the roads sometimes like a lake. That
makes driving a trip.
This week was pretty quiet without our northern friends. The
sun shone all week and the beach was full of visitors. The
temperature was in the 80’s until today and we did outside
things.
Our dinghy makes a good sightseeing craft. We motored down to
Tavernier Creek through a home-made channel of toilet seats
with boat names and other insightful phrases. I was hoping to
see porpoises run with us but not today.
We did have a visit from a manatee. It seems they like
freshwater or the discharge from our air conditioners. I’ve
never seen a manatee until this trip. This is the second one
that has visited our boat here. I saw my first ones as we
pulled into our moorage spot at Captiva Island. They’re either
following me or they’re not as endangered as they were before.
We did make one great find this week. Stone crabs right off
the boat. I’m sad the season’s almost over but we’re enjoying
them none the less. As a matter of fact we’re enjoying the
fresh seafood period!
I can’t believe we’ll only be here for another month. Bob’s
been plotting our course from here to Charleston, SC. Taylor
has invited us to his 4th birthday party on or about April 6th
and of course we can’t say no. We’re allowing three weeks to
make our way to Charleston. We’ll leave the boat there for 10
days while we get a “Taylor fix”. There is a Great Loop
Rendezvous in Charleston April 5-8th. Maybe we’ll get to meet
some other cruisers before or after our trip home.
I have to tell you about these pictures. The palm tree and
blue sky is what I look at in the morning while I drink my
coffee. That’s what I’ll miss most. The table and umbrella is
our picnic spot and Bob’s visiting spot. The boys from this
end of the dock congregate to solve the problems of the world
(or drink beer and solve the problems of the world).
